9/11/2003 - Solar Powered Light for Sept. 11, Memorial
GO Solar Company designed, donated and installed a solar powered light for a City of Los Angeles memorial dedicated to the victims and families of Californian's who died on September 11, 2001.
The solar power system was installed on 9/11/2003 and the electricity supplied to the light for the evening cerem
onies was generated before the sun went down.
It was an honor and privilege to be a part of this memorial, which includes 86 trees planted in 2002, in memory of Californians killed on 9/11/01.
Shell Solar donated a 75-Watt solar panel to power the solar memorial light.

During the installation of the solar energy system airplanes in formation flew over North Hollywood Park, this was a very special day.

This plaque is illuminated nightly by solar power.

TV reporters started arriving in the afternoon.

The evening ceremony was an intimate affair for family members.
Californians named on the plaque, who died on September 11th 2001, included passengers aboard the airplanes that crashed into the Pentagon, World Trade Center and Pennsylvania.

Grandsons of Captain John Yamnicy Sr. light candles at the memorial.

Speakers included Hollywood Beautification Team - Director, Sharyn Romano, Los Angeles City Council Members - Tom LaBonge and Wendy Greuel, and Graham Owen of GO Solar Company.

Memorial plaque illuminated with solar and candle light. The desired subtle lighting is accomplished with one 20 Watt, 12 Volt halogen light fixture.

Electricity generated by the solar panel is stored in a battery during the day for use at night. The solar panel will last for many decades.
A solar lighting and charge controller is integrated into the system to monitor battery voltage as well as turning on the light fixture at dusk. When the solar panel produces only 3 Volts it is dark enough to automatically supply power to the light fixture.
Family members of those killed on September eleventh visited the park during day of the solar system installation. This proved to be a very moving experience for those involved at GO Solar who were installing the solar lighting system.
